On May 14th, my sister, Susie, called to let me know that she was going to leave work early to take our mom to be hospitalized for a broken wrist from a fall and for dehydration. An hour later, Susie called again, to tell me she had just learned that our brother, Mike Griffing, was at his workplace when he somehow fell off of a ladder and landed on his head, sustaining a traumatic brain injury.
You can imagine how scary it was for Susie and me, but it was by far more devastating for Mike's wife, Natalie, and their sons, Sam, 21, and Zach, 18. What was supposed to be a very exciting day for Zach, the last day of his senior year in high school, turned out to be a day of confusion, fear, and anxiety.
Two days prior to this, Mike, a very proud father, and rightly so, had posted a picture of Zach, Natalie, Zach's wrestling coaches, and himself on Facebook, announcing that Zach received a college wrestling scholarship.
Mike and Natalie were planning to attend Zach's graduation ceremony and afterwards, host a party for him in their home on the following Sunday.
Life has changed for Mike and his family since May 14th. Perhaps you have followed Natalie's blog, where she has articulately, intimately shared what life has been like for them since that day.

I, along with all of Mike's family and friends, continue to be amazed at how much progress Mike has made, and at what an awesome, supportive wife Natalie has been for Mike. The medical teams at both Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Madonna Rehabilitation Center have provided Mike with outstanding care and rehabilitation.
Natalie has been by Mike's side every single day since his injury, for which I am so grateful. She remained with him every waking hour while he was hospitalized in Overland Park for three weeks, and she worked along side him while he was at Madonna Rehabilitation at Lincoln, Nebraska for seven weeks, learning all she could about how to best support Mike.
While rehabilitation for Mike continues in Kansas City, it is uncertain when Mike will be able to return to work. Natalie has returned to her job, working early morning hours at home, driving Mike to his rehabilitation 6-7 hrs sessions, continuing her work day at her office, and finally picking Mike up after work, Monday through Friday.
It's time for Zach to begin college today, August 11th! I have experienced the mixed emotions parents have when taking kids to college. Mike and Natalie must be feeling proud, excited, happy, sad, concerned, hopeful, and yet worried about expenses.
Expenses continue to pile up due to Natalie being off work for the last three months. Their financial challenges are adding to their stress. Mike wants more than anything to return to his job, but first he needs to finish many more weeks in rehabilitation to help him reach his full potential, and to heal.
As Mike's big sister, I wish I could help make everything much easier for him and his family, yet I know I can't. So, I do what I can, which is to pray ~ A LOT! On behalf of my entire family, I want to express our appreciation for the blessing of both your continued prayers and your encouraging words of support!
And now, I am asking for your help in providing financial support for Mike and Natalie through this extremely challenging stage of their lives. We are grateful for any support you are able to provide; no gift is too small. Thank you!
