Support English Language Learners in Western NY

For two years we have been breaking language barriers with the Spanish Speaking community in Geneseo, NY and the surrounding areas. In Spring 2020, the pandemic gave us a new barrier: distance. Despite the difficulties of shifting online, our team succeeded in providing tutoring and support to our families during this time! However, this last success took us to a crossroads. The unpredictability of the pandemic reminded us of our tenuous position as a small volunteer organization. In order to provide a permanent safe space for language exchange and cultural education, our vision is to become a nonprofit charitable organization that has a full-time staff. This will allow us to grow in size and into different languages, regions, and scope while also offering the continuity that our community members deserve.
Our team is passionate about helping those who are limited by a language and cultural barrier in the United States. For this reason, we have decided to do everything in our power to turn Cultures Learning TOGETHER (commonly referred to as simply TOGETHER) into a permanent organization operating out of Geneseo, NY.
By becoming a nonprofit charitable organization with 501(c)(3) status, we will be eligible to receive tax-exempt donations and grants. This will allow us to hire a full-time staff who dedicate themselves to helping the members of our community to break the language barrier. However, before we are able to reach this status, there are several expenses that we need to cover. This includes hiring a lawyer to advise on the legal proceedings, a website to share our vision and register a logo so that we can be recognized by the community, just to name a few. If we reach our goal of crowdfunding $3,000, we will have enough to become a legitimate organization and begin helping more people.
Cultures Learning TOGETHER was started in 2018 as a program in which passionate young adults, professors, and community members share language skills, learn from each other, and develop personally and professionally. That is the reason why we call TOGETHER a win-win program. We accomplish this by holding tutoring sessions in which young adults and non-English speaking individuals come together to learn. We commonly see entire families come to the tutoring sessions. This way, the parents can spend time learning English while their kids receive support with their school work. At the same time, our tutors learn other cultures, practice other languages and develop their teaching skills. It is a WIN-WIN program. The majority of our members come from the Livingston County (New York) area. As we grow, we will look to expand into other counties that would benefit from such a program operating in their region.
