César Fierro, free after 40 years on death row

César Fierro was, until very recently, the oldest Mexican prisoner on death row in the United States. He languished for over forty years in a Texas prison for a murder that he did not commit, despite evidence of police corruption and a forced confession. César was 23 when he was convicted in 1979.  He was released in May 2020.

When we hear about cases like César’s, we think that this is a triumph because César is free, but César was given nothing by the State to compensate him for the 40 years of his life that were stolen from him. He lost his mother and brother while he was in prison. He is without any means of support and the State will not compensate César for what they did to him.
