What are you two up to now?

Frankly, we just wanted to mix up our fitness routines! The Coquitlam Crunch has been a favourite of ours for a few years. Now, with the upgraded staircase and an itch to try something new, we wondered, "How can we challenge ourselves this year?"

And so, Crunch for Kids was born.

Okay, okay, tell me the rules!

- Fundraising takes place between February 14 - March 31.

- For every $10 raised, we promise one round trip on the Crunch staircase. That’s 460 steps up - and 460 steps down. This takes us 8.5 minutes on average.

- We're aiming to complete at least 10 trips a day – depending on fundraising levels, time availability, physical condition, etc. That will put us on the hill at least an hour per day.

- We've set a target range of March 1 to April 30 to complete all our trips. For the sake of our health and prior commitments, we will cap our challenge at 1000 trips - an average of 16 per day. However, if we surpass $10,000, please keep going! We'll cross that bridge then.

And where's all this money going?

It didn't take us long to decide on KidSport BC . As both athletes and coaches within the Tri-Cities for over a decade, we know the power of sport in shaping young lives and think every child deserves that opportunity.

From the KidSport Canada website:

KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids aged 18 and under. Through a confidential application process we provide grants so they can play a season of sport. Nationally, KidSport is comprised of a network of 11 provincial/territorial KidSport chapters and 166 community KidSport chapters. Since its creation in 1993, over 750,000 kids across the country have been given the chance to play sport through KidSport grants and sport introduction programming.

From Victor:

"Growing up, I was eager to try every sport but, unfortunately, my family couldn’t afford all the registration fees and the equipment costs that came with organized sports. With KidSport's support, I was able to register and play in my first year of football. Without this financial support, I would've never had the opportunity to fall in love with such an amazing sport and meet so many great coaches and mentors in my life. Being part of a team taught me many valuable lessons that are relevant today. The support from KidSport made it possible for me to change my life around as a troubled youth and work towards my dream of being a professional athlete."

From Tom:

"I could ramble on all day about the impact organized sports had on my life. From building my confidence as a young teenager to paying for my college tuition - sports quite literally shaped who I am.

Now, as I return to these organizations as a coach, I am determined to help kids discover the same opportunities that I was so lucky to have.

Unfortunately, these programs are expensive to run and, therefore, can make it difficult on low-income families. This is why I hold KidSport in such high regard. Their hard work ensures that no child loses out on these life-changing opportunities."
