A beautiful short video about the school:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UTNW2BH-Xk&t=10s
The KATTAIKKUTTU SANGAM is a not-for-profit association of professional Kattaikkuttu performers. Founded in 1990 by Kattaikkuttu actor, director, teacher and playwright P. Rajagopal together with theatre scholar Hanne M. de Bruin and fifteen Kattaikkuttu actors and musicians, this grassroots initiative unites performers across styles and regions. The Gurukulam is the realization of a visionary dream that P. Rajagopal expressed to his wife Hanne, he wanted to bring Kattaikkuttu training and education together under one and the same roof so that other children, in contrast to himself, would no longer be forced to leave school when they opt for a career in Kattaikkuttu. The school welcomes children from the poorest and most disadvantaged communities in Tamil Nadu and provides them access to artistic, academic and professional skills. “We are raising a future generation of capable individuals who have the tools to meet the vast challenges they and their families face on a daily basis. It is our goal that our students can meet the world
empowered, regardless of the challenging circumstances they were born under. We achieve this by maintaining a strong sense of gender equity, equal rights and respect for each other, and equal access to all of our academic and artistic programming.’’
My time as a volunteer at the Gurukulam has been an incredibly beautiful and unique experience. During my stay, I have come to appreciate Kattaikkuttu more and more. With great admiration, I look at what P.Rajagopal and Hanne have created with this school. I have experienced how important this is for the children and how much it benefits them. I feel that this is a place for everybody to be themselves.
So that's why I really want to raise money for their fundraising campaign Karna's Eyes.
Rajagopal and Hanne have chosen the figure of Karna to represent the students of the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam. Like them, Karna is an underdog. Stigmatized by caste, he is looked down upon by society and denied access to competing with others at an equal level. It is our aim to provide our students with artistic and academic skills that allow them to leave the school as capable individuals ready to break barriers of caste, gender, inequality and poverty that have trapped so many of their families for generations. Furthermore, Karna is famous for his generosity.
Thank you so much for your time. I'm very grateful for every donation :-).
