Cremation for Fred and remains recovery

My Grandpa Fred was on his way to Western Montana when his car broke down back home in Fort Peck, MT. He was set to live with us after years of traveling. Grandpa Fred took part in many medicine lodge and other ceremonies back home where he created many relationships. We’ve been working for months to contact him with no success, especially over the holiday. He was to be home by snowfall but did not arrive. After months of no communication and no annual Christmas wreath, we began to worry.  

Fred Stein passed away due to complications from Covid on October 30th in Billings, MT. Because no one was notified, he was cremated and is being held at Dahl funeral home where the county is holding charge of $1,700.00 for his cremation cost. Fred did not have burial insurance and was not a tribal member. Fundraising is set at $2000.00 for travel to Billings to retrieve his remains to be brought home and for covering cremation cost. Our family does not have the resources to cover these costs. We would appreciate any contribution to bring Fred home to family. Obituary and memorial services TBA.
