Help create vital space for wildlife in East Yorks

Donation protected

We're asking for your help to create transform an acre of land in East Yorkshire into a haven for wildlife.

We've already completed the very first stage of our project involving removing 200 metres of tall mesh fence to let wildlife into our species rich wildflower meadow. We've also started creating a wildlife corridor, enabling wildlife to travel across the land.

We've also purchased 16 native tree saplings to create a new woodland area of the wildflower meadow to include: Alder Buckthorn, Spindle, Crab Apple, Hazel, Rowan, Field Maple, Silver Birch and Wild Cherry

We are now fundraising for the next part of the project which will involve:

  • Adding plants along the wildlife corridor to provide shelter for wildlife and food for insects. This will include adding hedgehog ladders.
  • Adding bird and bat boxes along the length of the corridor
  • Installing a barn owl box on a pole on the edge of the wildflower meadow.
  • Adding groups of larger trees to provide shelter and food for birds and insects.
  • Removing concrete from a 350 metre square area of the garden (following the donation of cattery units currently covering it to Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary) and then transforming it into a new area of woodland with a mix of native trees. We would also like to install a bird hide in this area and more bird and bat boxes.
  • Ensuring that that the wildflower meadow, surrounding garden and the work you support is accessible via Open Days to inspire people to help wildlife in their own gardens

I'm Emma and I'm a passionate wildlife gardener and wild hedgehog expert. Over the years I've helped nurse many hundreds of sick and injured hedgehogs and released them back to the wild.

With my partner Phil and our dog Cavendish, we have a unique opportunity to improve a beautiful area of East Yorkshire where we live for wildlife. The property has wonderful wildlife potential but needs lots of hard graft (plus cash!) to enable wildlife to thrive here. We've already removed a 2 metre high mesh fence that meant that wildlife (hedgehogs, deer, hares, amphibians) couldn't get in or out.

Now that the fence is removed, we are busy creating a vital wildlife corridor, including planting to provide food and shelter for wildlife and insects. We will also provide safe entry and exit points to our land. We are excited to complete the works in this area and then to move on to creating the new woodland in an area currently covered by concrete.

I'm passionate about education and will run a couple of Open Days each year as a minimum for people to see the improvement works and inspire people to be wildlife friendly in their own gardens.

Thank you so much for reading and for all your support.
