Back in 2010, I was asked to run my first 5k road race. Since I had only played baseball my whole life, I figured that anything longer than 90 feet was too much work and, to put it simply, just a waste of time. After barely training for that first 5k, I ran and finished feeling as if I were going to die. But, as time went on, I realized that this might be an easy and inexpensive way for an “old guy” to keep in shape. Since that first 5k I have completed over 30 5k’s, 2 10k’s, 4 half marathons and, now, 2 marathons, each and every one going toward a great cause.
In March of this year I decided that I would enter my name into the lottery for a chance to be one of 40,000 runners to participate in the Chicago Marathon. Once again, I never imagined that, out of all of the applicants from around the world, that my name would be chosen. On April 19th, the lottery was held and later that evening I received an email informing me that I indeed had been chosen to run in one of world’s greatest marathons! Although very excited just to be participating in such a great event, I have decided that I want to make each and every one of those 26.2 miles count toward a small and local cause that is near and dear to my heart.
On October 9th, 2016 I will be running in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and raising funds in support of the David M. Affonso Memorial Foundation. Cancer, unfortunately, has touched us all in some way. Sadly, in 2009, I lost one of my golfing buddy's and my great friend, Dave, to a rare form of lung cancer at the young age of 59. Since then, the Affonso family and friends have set up an amazing charity that assists patients and their families with the increasingly high out-of-pocket costs incurred during and beyond the treatment of this horrible disease. As we all know, these funds rely solely on the generosity of others so please make every one of my 26.2 miles count by helping me reach my fundraising goal.
