We have been given an amazing opportunity by the Alliance Theatre to participate in their Spotlight Series, a platform for original digital theatrical work. Our plan is to Adapt Christopher Hampton’s play Cracking Zeus into this format. We will be given a sixty day window to complete it that begins Jan 4 2021, and ends on March 4.
How can you help?
We intend to create a work of the highest caliber, with brilliant hard working artists who have had their livelihoods taken by the current pandemic. The Alliance has offered us a grant, but to complete our project we need your help. Your donation will help to compensate these wonderful artists for their time and ability. Any donation of any size will aid us greatly.
What is the play?
Cracking Zeus is an attempt to push a myth about addiction and polarization further, to evolve it to its next logical conclusion: the present day. To deliver through immense theatricality, a mixture of artistic forms, and striking social resonance a simple message: we are all connected, no one is greater than another. Hera, a vengeful goddess, has located an illegitimate child of her husband Zeus. His name is Baniaha, he lives with his mother and helps run her church. He also mentors some local children. Baniaha, who has never known his father, is searching for a greater sense of his own identity. Hera wants to kill him. When Hera arrives in their city she meets Rufus, a homeless drug addict. Hera determines that Rufus is the lowest member of this society and plans to get Baniaha addicted to the crack cocaine that Rufus is so fond of. Hera also smokes some of the crack. The play is ultimately about hierarchy and the possibility of someone to change their station in life. It is filled with humor and social awareness coupled with a very current and painful tragedy.
