Brandi was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis on June 14, 2014 at 21 years old. She began treatment with injections a few times a week, but it was realized months later that her treatments were not aggressive enough and new lesions were continuing to form. She started monthly infusions of a risky medication called Tysabri and had been on that medication for 2 1/2 years, until her risk of developing PML, a brain eating bacteria, became too high. In January 2017, Brandi was told that she was no longer able to continue treatments and would have to wait until the FDA approved a new medication.
During the 2 1/2 years of being on monthly infusions, Brandi and her husband were unable to get pregnant due to the risk of fetal demise or abnormalities that could happen pregnancy. When she was no longer able to continue her infusion, her doctor gave her the okay to try and conceive, as she had been completely stable. Brandi and TJ were completely overjoyed when she found out she was pregnant in March 2017.
Over the next couple of months Brandi's health started to deteriorate. She lost more weight than was healthy for pregnancy, unable to keep food or most liquids down. She began to lose function in her legs and had numbness in her arms. She was hospitalized at the end of May and doctors were unsure of what was going on, originally thinking she may have developed PML. After many extensive tests, it was determined that Brandi had developed new lesions and was sent to an inpatient rehabilitation unit to work on getting her healthy and strong enough to return home. She worked hard through the pain and gave 100% every day, but continued to lose sensation her both of her legs and her right arm. As of June 26, 2017 Brandi was re-admitted to the main hospital without clear answers as to what is happening in her brain.
While she was in rehabilitation, her doctors expected her to return home needing a motorized wheelchair, hospital bed for home, and many other medical equipment to be able to be safe in her home. This fund has been started to begin raising the money needed for this equipment and for the continued medical care and physical therapy she will need in the future.
