COVID-19 Native Youth Arts Initiative

Yá'át'ééh!

We are Izzy and Alyssa. We are sisters and we're Diné (Navajo). Our mom is from Shiprock, NM and our dad is from Shonto, AZ. We have a lot of memories spending time with family on the Navajo Nation. During the Spring and Summer is usually when we would visit family. This year is different. We had to change our plans, like so many families, and cancel our travel so that we helped slow the spread of COVID-19.

Our family on the Navajo Nation is not in the same position. The Navajo Nation is currently the number one hotspot in positive COVID-19 cases in the United States. Families are under strict curfews and 57 hour lock downs on the weekends. My mom and auntie recently organized a donation drive for food, cleaning supplies, face masks, and gloves for the Navajo Nation. The donations collected supported members of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, Utah.

We thought about what we can do and how we can contribute to help families on the Navajo Nation. School is coming to an end and other kids like us are now getting ready for summer. As states across the nation open up, Native Youth are not as fortunate. Many Tribal Nations still have strict stay-at-home guidelines in place.

We want to help by collecting arts and crafts, fabric and yarn, school supplies, outdoor recreation equipment, kindles, and tablets so that Native Youth sheltering in place have access to art and cultural activities while at home. We want to purchase kindles and tablets so that youth can read books not easily accessible on the reservation and tablets to connect with their families off the reservation. We also think outdoor recreation is really important right now for exercise and for mental health and well-being. School supplies would be collected throughout the summer so that by the time school starts we can donate backpacks full of school supplies to Native Youth.

We plan to outreach to Native elders and educators to determine the best place to donate the items purchased from this initiative and give back to our community. Most importantly, we want to educate and empower other Native Youth to slow the spread of COVID-19 by staying home and staying safe so that our elders are protected from the virus and they continue to share our language, culture, and traditions with our generation and seven generations into the future.

Any donation amount is appreciated. You can also visit our Amazon Wish List to purchase items needed.
