COVID-19 in Malawi

At the time of starting this appeal, there had been 17 confirmed cases in Malawi and 2 deaths. As of 2 April, there have been 37 confirmed cases and 3 deaths. Although official figures are still currently low, it is understood that many rural communities across districts in the country are unable to take extra precautionary measures to stay safe from contracting and/or spreading the disease.
Many communities do not have access to clean water and sanitation, nor do they have the means to self isolate with others in their homes. Many also cannot afford to buy food for days or weeks at a time, and as such come into contact with many at local markets. In some cases, despite the services being free to use, numerous hospitals in rural areas are highly undersupplied and also understaffed, resulting in many not attempting the trip to a hospital. So, in the case that the virus begins to spread across rural communities, it will likely prove difficult to contain.
Many of us have already witnessed the difference made when the disease is taken seriously early on in countries around the world.
That is why we are making this appeal on behalf of our local partners in Malawi - Center for Community Education and Social Development (CECESD) who are working to provide awareness and support to people most at risk in the country. They aim to communicate across two of the 28 districts in Malawi about preventative methods to keep themselves and others safe alongside providing soap and hand washing buckets to the communities they plan to inform.
In regions around the world where health systems are especially fragile, COVID-19 can prove an especially worrying disease to witness the spread of. That is why we would appreciate any support you can give for CECESD to assist as many communities as possible - even if you can’t donate, a share will go a long way!
