Courtnie's Cancer Treatment Fund

Courtnie is a dedicated wife, sister, daughter, aunt, colleague, and friend to so many people. One year ago, Courtnie graduated with her masters and began feeling sick and fatigued. She attributed this to the pressure of school and continued to pursue her dreams. After several bouts of what appeared to be a common cold, Courtnie followed up with her doctor. While all test results came back negative, her lymph nodes were inflamed. The doctors could not offer any explanation for the inflammation, but advised her to keep her eye on the situation.
Over the course of a year Courtnie thrived professionally. She has taken on a leadership role and been promoted at her job. She has had a positive impact among her company and peers. Despite her work ethic and dedication, Courtnie continued to feel ill over time and continued to get sick frequently. After suffering from night sweats, chills, and hospitalizations followed by bloodwork and scans, it was revealed that Courtnie had Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in her chest, neck, liver and spleen. This was a devastating blow to a 30-year-old who has always maintained a healthy lifestyle. Until her illness, she regularly served in the Children’s Ministry of her church. Her science education tells her that this will be a tough battle, but her FAITH let’s her know God’s got this!
Courtnie’s passion is children. She works at schools around the Jacksonville area providing athletic training and physical therapy treatments to young athletes. She is also the proud aunt to many nieces and nephews. Her most rewarding role would one day to become a Mom to her own children. Last week, Courtnie received a fertility drug to help increase her chances of being able to conceive a baby after her chemotherapy treatments are completed. This fertility drug has a high rate of success, however there is still a chance that she will need to undergo further fertility treatments in the future.
This GoFundMe has been carefully calculated. There is no excess. The average cost of cancer patient’s medical bills is $40,000, not including prolonged chemotherapy treatments, alternative treatments, and fertility treatments. This amount that we calculated for Courtnie is to help cover the costs of her mounting medical bills, her cost of living (should she need to miss work during her treatments), and to cover any and all fertility treatments she will need in the future.
Courtnie’s plan of treatment includes chemotherapy beginning this week. She will receive chemo every 2 weeks for the next two months. After 2 months of treatment, she will have another scan done to determine if the chemotherapy is working. If all goes well, she will continue to receive chemotherapy for an additional 4 months. According to the plan, Courtnie will receive chemotherapy for a total of six months. After her chemotherapy treatment is concluded, she will have to get PET scans done every 3 months to ensure the cancer is gone and not coming back.
These next six months will be tough, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. As Courtnie’s sister, I want to help ease the financial burden of this journey for her. She needs all her strength, focus, and faith for her health…. not her finances.

Lymphomas are cancers that start in white blood cells called lymphocytes. There are 2 main types of lymphoma. Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The American Cancer Society’s estimates for Hodgkin disease in the United States for 2017 are:
· About 8,260 new cases (3,610 in females and 4,650 in males)
· About 1,070 deaths (440 females, 630 males) from this cancer
Both children and adults can develop Hodgkin lymphoma, but it is most common in early adulthood (especially in a person’s 20s). The risk of Hodgkin lymphoma rises again in late adulthood (after age 55). Overall, the average age at the time of diagnosis is 39. Hodgkin lymphoma is rare in children younger than 5 years of age. About 10% to 15% of cases are diagnosed in children and teenagers. Survival rates have improved in the past few decades, largely due to advances in treatment. The 5-year relative survival rate for all patients diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma is now about 86%, and the 10-year relative survival rate is about 80% .
