Update:
It is estimated that about 4500 people have been rescued, a total of 845 houses have been damaged; 123 km of road, 58 bridges, 278 government buildings and 3,800 electric poles have been damaged. Exact number of deaths are not known yet.

Story:
Coorg, also know as Kodagu, is one of the districts of Karnataka, India.  Coorg is located on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats and the district is world famous for its dramatic landscape, its wildlife, its coffee production, and its uniquecultural heritage.Every year, hundreds of thousandsof tourists from around India and around the world visit Coorg to enjoyitsnatural beauty, see its wildlife, and meet the people.

Unfortunately, Coorg has just been through one of the worst natural calamities in its entire history.Thousands of citizens have been made homeless due to an unusually strong monsoon season. Coorg’s famous mountains have been flattened and Coorg’s rich soil is turning to mud due to extreme water table elevation. Many local coffee estates and agricultural fields have been lost due to landslides and flooding, shutting down local businesses and eliminating jobs.

Every day we hear stories about our relatives, friends, neighbors and other local residents needing to be rescued from the hilly areas . Many local residents must walk for miles across the mountainous landscape, which has become dangerously unstable from the unusually heavy rainfall, to reach safe areas. The evacuation operation is ongoing, and a few government and non-profit organizations have come forward to provide food, clothing and shelter to those affected.  But, as the situation settles more help will be needed to help Coorg rebuild lost homes and businesses.

Questions such as,  ‘Can people get back to their homes? If not, can they rebuild their homes and agricultural land? Can they bounce back from the devastation and lead a normal life?’ have been lingering in our minds the past few days

Being away from our hometown, the best way we can help is by raising funds to rebuild. We would like to reach out our friends who know us personally and to anyone who has visited, stayed or knows about Coorg, to contribute towards the noble cause. These funds will be will be used to build much-needed  shelters and roads, and to support any initiative that will help the residents in our hometown bounce back from this unprecedented calamity.

The funds that will be collected during this campaign will be given to Coorg’s Ramakrishna Trust and other charitable organizations that are working towards similar goal. We will provide constant updates during the process of the fundraiser. Please contact us if you have more questions or suggestions.

We have provided a few web links and videos that will help you know more about the current situation in Coorg.

Thank you.
