Continuo Foundation is raising funds to make grants to UK period-instrument ensembles, mobilising artistic projects that create employment for freelance musicians whose careers are at risk due to Covid-19.

Our experienced team of professionals - from business, classical music, academia and media - are passionate about retaining these valued period musicians and are all donating our time to run Continuo Foundation.
UK period-instrument ensembles and orchestras were pioneers of historical performance, and thanks to the virtuosic freelance musicians who have dedicated their lives to studying and performing this music, the sector was a vibrant and thriving one, with a tradition of excellence admired internationally, until Covid-19 struck. Now, due to cancellations and restrictions on performances and touring, this sector faces devastation.
What will happen if we allow the artistry of period instrumentalists to disappear?
Without action now, historical performance could become a lost art in this country, and the next generation of artists entering the field will lose access to expertise and lack future career opportunities.
A recent UK Musicians Union survey showed 34% of freelance musicians may leave the profession, and a similar proportion have been excluded from government income support schemes. Musicians we have surveyed are desperate for paid performance opportunities, and for their ensembles to survive the crisis.
We urgently need to raise funds to protect these artists and their work. Any help you are able to give will make an enormous difference and will help us reach our goal of announcing the first round of grants before year-end.
