Arianna and I were in high school together many years ago in Italy. I ended up working as a teacher in a school in London, she is an astronomer who now works in Rio de Janeiro.
One day Arianna called me in tears, distressed about the living conditions and lack of opportunities for children living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro... On top of that, now they have had no education whatsoever (on line or face to face) for a year.
So we decided to set up a London/Rio joint project to offer the children in the favelas an opportunity to learn, be seen, and appreciate the value of critical and scientific thinking when faced with fake news, prejudice and the message that tells them they don't have opportunities. My students have been given the opportunity to appreciate their privilege of access to resources and education, but also to share it (as much as possible): every week we meet on Zoom, and my year 12 students created lessons and activities to teach English, Science and PSHE to the children in Rio.
So far, Arianna and I (and my mum!) have funded the project: we bought a couple of laptops, meals for the children who attend the "lunch club" and have also managed to give a small wage to local adults who have helped manage the project and ensured trust from the community: seeing that we are putting our money where our mouth is has really ignited excitement and trust in the favela community - we can really change the life chances of these people!
NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP: if we reach the fundraising target, we will be able to sustain the project for the next year.
Any amount will make a difference and will send the message that we care about our fellow humans, and we put our money where our mouth is.
