Conservation of Mammals in South Africa

WHAT I AM FUNDING FOR
Hi everyone, I am incredibly fortunate to be going on the trip of a lifetime to South Africa next June to study the predator prey relationships in the Dinokeng Game Reserve! This trip will aid me in my education and help me become a more desirable candidate for conservation jobs in the future. On this 6 week trip, I will aid Operation Wallacea (Opwall) in their vital research which will aid in animal and environmental conservation. Operation Wallacea is an organisation that has been collecting data on different ecosystems around the world for over 25 years.  Their goal is to help local governments manage the wilderness around them, and maintain stable populations of different species native to the area. They have provided a huge data set for data analysis which I will be helping add to next summer!

ABOUT ME
I am a 20-year-old student from Glasgow, Scotland, who has a passion for Big Cats. All my life I have wanted to study/work with them and aid in the conservation of the species and thanks to studying Zoology at the University of Glasgow, I will hopefully be able to do this very soon!
I would love to work in ReWilding and boosting population sizes of felids around the world to help conserve these incredible animals. My biggest inspiration is Kevin Richardson who runs a foundation in South Africa in which I would love to visit. This once in a lifetime expedition will allow me to gain invaluable experience and meet amazing people who will aid in my future career and possibly even provide one.

THE EXPEDITION

The trip consists of 6 weeks camping in the Dinokeng Game Reserve, just outside of Johannesburg. The  reserve has over 30 camera traps that help track animals living in the area and monitor their numbers. This also allows us to monitor the human-wildlife interactions in the area, as often this is what poses the most threat to the animals.
With the reserve being fenced off to help stop spread diseases and keep humans and animals safe, there is often need for human intervention in the maintenance of the environment. Over grazing can become a problem in a densely populated landscape, and over predation can lead to the very opposite effect. This programme will help me learn how to delicately balance this dilemma. The whole idea of this expedition is to get up close with African mammals and learn how to properly conserve them. Opwall often does the data analysis and research for smaller establishments that often cant afford the in depth research required, and so everyone benefits from this research expedition.

WHAT I NEED
Unfortunately, experiences like these don't come cheap. I do not come from a wealthy background, and so wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford the cost of the expedition, however I am a firm believer in working hard to achieve your goals. I intend to work VERY hard to raise the money I need to fund this expedition, and I hope you will be able to help me too!

Any donation provided is appreciated, and during these hard times even more so. If donations are not possible, sharing this post would help me boost how many people see the important work I will be doing.
