Conrad's Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
The Conrad De La Rosa Memorial Scholarship  was established by the students, teachers and staff of La Quinta High School  the day after Conrad died. It is an annual scholarship.

We lost Conrad in a traffic accident May 21, 2003, just 9 days after his 19th birthday, and just two days before the end of his freshman year at College of the Desert  .

Conrad was a graduate of La Quinta High School's class of 2002. Conrad was a journalist with La Quinta High School's newspaper, Hawkview . During his senior year, he was also the newspaper's advertising editor. After graduating, and while attending College of the Desert, Conrad was hired by La Quinta High School as a consultant to the Hawkview. Conrad worked with the newspaper's journalism students, assisting them with their ad sales, and helping them to establish the La Quinta High School Journalism Club.

Conrad was in the Tough Guys and Gals Do Dance class. He was also in choir and was a member of the Camerata La Quinta choral group. Conrad was fluent with the guitar, clarinet, Benny Goodman and Ozzy Osbourne.

Conrad's two greatest loves were music and journalism. His goals were to become a music teacher or journalist. His scholarship is awarded to the senior or graduating junior who has excelled in music or journalism, or both.

Although the scholarship is not large, it is a wonderful way to keep Conrad's memory alive. We, his parents, are grateful to the teachers and staff of La Quinta High School for all their assistance in helping us to make this happen.

Who receives it?

When choosing a recipient for Conrad's scholarship we look for a student who was in music, choir, dance or journalism... the things Conrad was proud of doing in school. We also look for someone who will be attending College of the Desert  in the fall, like Conrad did. The money will always go to a College of the Desert student.

We look at the student's need for money. If a student is going to receive scholarship money from other sources, then we move on to someone else who hasn't been so lucky.

A great help in selecting a student for Conrad's scholarship is Ms. Carol Ramirez , Scholarship Coordinator at La Quinta High School. She is the counselor who is in charge of scholarships and financial aid. Another source we use for guidance is Ms. Suzannah Kennedy, Conrad's journalism teacher and advisor to the school's newspaper, Hawkview. Both have always been invaluable to us when it comes to selecting a student and we can't thank them enough.

Our final decision is always based on 'What would Conrad do?'

How Conrad's scholarship works:

All donations are deposited with the La Quinta High School ASB in an account dedicated to Conrad's scholarship. After a recipient has been chosen, the funds for that award are withdrawn from Conrad's account and sent by check to the Financial Aid Department at College of the Desert, where it is deposited into an account in the scholarship recipient's name. The student is then free to use the funds for tuition, books and other school related expenses.

Please know that 100% of all funds raised go directly into Conrad's scholarship. None of the funds are used in any way for 'overhead' or 'expenses'. Conrad's website, the expense and time to maintain it, fund drives and their related expenses, scholarship award certificates, photos and any other expenses related to Conrad or his scholarship in anyway, is volunteered by Conrad's parents, family and friends. You can be assured that all of your generous donations will benefit La Quinta High School students now and in the years to come.

You should know that GoFundMe.com deducts a fee of 7.9% + $0.30 from each donation. This is not an additional charge to you, the donor. It is taken directly from the donation. To ensure that every dollar you donate to Conrad's scholarship goes to the student, we, Conrad's parents, will match, dollar for dollar, all GoFundMe.com fees.

Donations made to Conrad's scholarship through this GoFundMe.com campaign are not tax deductible. However, if you'd like your donation to be tax deductible, we will gratefully accept your personal check, money order or cashier's check. Please make your tax deductible donation payable to: The Conrad De La Rosa Memorial Scholarship/La Quinta High School.

We ask that all donations made by check be sent to this address:

The Conrad De La Rosa Memorial Scholarship
c/o Leighton or Elizabeth Anderson
P.O. Box 535
La Quinta, CA 92247

This way we can record your donation before we hand deliver it to Ms. Carol Ramirez at La Quinta High School, where we check and verify that your donation is properly credited to The Conrad De La Rosa Memorial Scholarship Fund. Ms. Ramirez will then mail you a receipt for your tax deductible donation. You may reach Ms. Ramirez at [phone redacted].

We've found Conrad's scholarship to be the best way to keep Conrad's memory alive. It's our hope that with your help Conrad's scholarship will continue for years to come. Conrad was a good guy. He deserves to be remembered. Thank you for your consideration and donation. Thank you for paying it forward in Conrad's name.
