Young Farmers for the Future: Wellspring Inc

Wellspring Inc is an organic community farm and education center located 30 mins north of Milwaukee in West Bend, WI. As a small organization, we are mobilizing for a future of food sovereignty in the Great Lakes region and beyond by systematically addressing the barriers that exist in local production and access to nourishing food. Our Farmers-In-Training (FIT) program offers a unique, immersive educational and work experience that prepares people for entering the field of organic and regenerative agriculture as food producers. We also offer regular workshops for the public on no-till gardening, cooking, small scale poultry, foraging, fermentation, and more. We host engaging, hands-on youth field trips on the farm, and work with dozens of regular volunteers each year through the WWOOF program and our Work-Trade program. Our farm supplies over 150 families throughout the season via our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and our partnerships with Casa Guadalupe and Fairshare Coalition help us offer our produce for free or subsidized rates for local families in need.
Now more than ever, we are in need of support for continuing and forwarding this work. We believe that a well-nourished people and a healthy, regenerated ecosystem go hand-in-hand. We believe that in order to achieve broad access to such nourishment, we need to help more people make the transition from consumer to producer. With only 1% of the population in America still farming, and the average age of the farmers nearing retirement status each passing year, now is the time to invest in the next generation of farmers. And with that next generation, comes the opportunity for empowering change for how we produce food and interact with the soil, plants, and animals where it comes from.
