Build a community climbing wall in Guatemala

Donation protected
We love seeing the difference that climbing makes in the lives of youth from low resource communities. Climbing develops physical and mental abilities, and it brings together youth from all backgrounds as they challenge themselves on the wall. Our organization, TopAntigua – a Guatemalan non-profit focused on leveraging the power of sports for positive youth development – has been supporting the talented athletes on the Antigua climbing team for the past three years. We want to grow the local climbing community by creating accessible climbing environments for youth and supporting climbers to reach their potential.

Our goal is to build a 12-meter (40 foot) community climbing wall in San Felipe, outside of Antigua. This wall will attract more youth to our sports for development program, Somos Campeones (We are Champions), that helps get youth off the streets and into a community built around climbing and fitness. The wall will also provide a better place for the athletes from the Antigua climbing team to train. The majority of these athletes are from low resource households and many are consistent medal winners in national competitions. Climbing has made a difference in these youths’ lives, and this wall will help them keep reaching new competitive heights.

EcoFarms, an ecological community center with a fantastic accessible location in San Felipe, has generously offered space for building the wall and working with youth. We are still working with the wall design, but we have planned the construction and fundraising in 4 phases:

Phase 1: Build a 4-meter wall (13 foot) for beginners and for teaching safety - $1500

Phase 2: Lay foundations and build roof to shelter the 12-meter wall - $2000

Phase 3: Build a 12-meter community climbing wall - $9500

Phase 4: Equip the wall with holds and volumes – Seek corporate sponsors and climbing gym partners

We are also seeking sponsors and grants combined with a social business model to cover the operational costs and grow our youth climbing and fitness program.

Our goals for the community climbing wall in 2020 are to:
·       Engage 60+ youth from low resource families, ages 7 to 19, as participants in our Champions program
·       Introduce 200+ more youth from local public and NGO schools to climbing

Our vision is to grow an inclusive local climbing community where youth from all backgrounds develop confidence and competence as climbers, and dedicated climbing athletes can train competitively.
