"What can we do to help the children and families in Ukraine and those that have left? " The scope of the problem is enormous. Trauma, loss, and fear have entered the world of these children. We know that in the past, Comfort Kits have been used effectively in other disasters and wars (e.g., in Haiti, Lao, Thailand, and elsewhere) by www.HealthFrontiers.org. We are also in discussions with Chicago-based centers and health care providers to introduce Comfort Kits to children exposed to trauma and violence within our own community. They too need healing care and skills to re-regulate their feelings.
Comfort Kits for Children are a healing intervention that is appropriate for the initial care of children who have been traumatized. The cost of each Comfort Kit is between $6 and $7 US dollars. A donation of $25 helps roughly 4 children.
We use donations to purchase the playful and stress-relieving kit contents. Volunteers assemble the kits and transport them into Ukraine and nearby communities that have taken in children and families. All donations go directly to the Comfort Kit Initiative, so we can provide this emotional aid. These simple kits contain a collection of items that help children re-regulate their feelings and offer calm moments during chaotic times. Kits come with expert guidance (printed cards and when needed or zoom calls) for caregivers, relief workers, parents, and teachers to "coach" children to explore and play with the items in the Comfort Kit. This allows a child to easily transition from the experience of extreme tension to a natural place of imagination, creativity, and fun. Once the child engages with the toys in the Comfort Kit, they usually continue to play with them -- having discovered how to create comfort for themselves.
