Support A Healing Arts Center & Museum in Memphis

**Support the Color Your Story Onto Mine Museum and Healing Center**

Dear friends and supporters,

I stand at a pivotal moment in my artistic journey, and I'm deeply aware of the incredible potential that lies before us. My creative practice has evolved into a powerful tool for non-violent communication, a medium that nurtures play, sparks imagination, and fosters emotional literacy, one brushstroke at a time. Drawing from my personal journey of healing and growth, which has been shaped by trauma and informed by care across the mental, spiritual, and emotional domains, I have not only experienced profound personal renewal but have also discovered a profound way to enrich my community.

My artistic mission is clear: I aim to dismantle the stigma surrounding adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This stigma often breeds complacency and silence in the face of child sexual violence, hindering the protection of vulnerable children. My artwork, characterized by vibrant colors, powerful narratives, and transformative essence expressed through acrylic on canvas, aims to transcend conventional art. I strive to incorporate self-published materials into my installations, infuse my work with visual narratives, and create a sanctuary where I can resurrect the chambers of my childhood—a space once dominated by the horrors of sexual violence, incest, and human trafficking. Through my art, I aspire to build a world where the evidence of healing, art, and recovery replaces the pain of the past.

Imagine, for instance, a room adorned with hanging candy bars, a PayDay suspended from the ceiling, or piled on a table as tokens of survival. Gone are the debris-laden floors, replaced with hopscotch and tic-tac-toe patterns created with tape on the floor, inviting visitors of all ages to play. Small bottles of bubbles stand ready for visitors to take home, with the hope that the world outside will be filled with bubbles blown in honor of child victims whose voices never had the chance to be heard. These thematic spaces encapsulate the erasure of the perspective of a malnourished, abandoned, and abused African-American young girl. The conspicuous absence of doors symbolizes the access granted to the public and the numerous missed opportunities for rescue and justice. This exhibition serves as a clarion call, raising awareness for the countless victims of human trafficking, abused children, and survivors of sexual assault. It does so not through explicit or violent visual re-enactments but by breaking the cycle of silence that perpetuates these traumas.

This profound journey has given rise to the Color Your Story Onto Mine Museum—an immersive sanctuary for the exploration, acknowledgment, and preservation of the narratives of victims, survivors, and offenders of ACEs. Within this haven, we invite the reclamation of personal narratives and the creation of one's own masterpiece. Through your generous donations, we will provide Color Your Story Onto Mine (CYSM) art kits, including journals or sketchbooks, canvases, paintbrushes, #2 pencils, and acrylic paint, to victims of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) so that they may color their stories onto mine.

Our mission transcends art alone; it seeks to cultivate emotional literacy and intelligence surrounding the burdens we carry and the stigmas we bear. Above all, it underscores the liberating potential of showing up for others, even when they may offer nothing in return—a profound act that has the power to unshackle us all from the bonds of self-stigmatization.

My current endeavor, the Canvas of Compassion Community Art Workshops, is a testament to my commitment to the community that once played a part in my own suffering. Through these workshops, I teach fundamental drawing skills and lead themed exercises that elevate moods, boost self-esteem, and champion emotional literacy. They serve as a blueprint for others to engage in non-violent communication and embark on their own journeys of healing.

Integral to this process is the publication of books featuring cover art created by workshop participants, along with featured introductions and dialogues with survivors. This initiative serves as a bridge to initiate conversations and simultaneously shatter the silence and complacency that allow ACEs to persist into adulthood. The cycle of silence perpetuates trauma, impedes stability, stifles imagination, extinguishes hope, propagates injustice, feeds addiction, fosters reoffending, justifies offenders, and ensnares entire communities. Breaking this cycle is paramount.

At the core of our ethos lies an unwavering belief in the transformative potential of art. Our mission is to provide a nurturing haven for individuals to embark on their journeys of healing. We ardently support those who have confronted adversity, trauma, or personal trials, empowering them to articulate their experiences through the potent medium of art.

But we need your help to take this mission to the next level. We aim to establish a dedicated Color Your Story Onto Mine Museum and Healing Center, a physical space where art, healing, and recovery converge to serve our community. This space will provide a permanent home for our workshops, exhibitions, and programs. It will be a sanctuary for those who seek to heal, express themselves, and find hope.

Your donation will directly contribute to the creation of this future building, ensuring that our mission continues to flourish. Every dollar you give brings us one step closer to providing a safe space for healing and creativity. Together, we can forge a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

Thank you for your support and belief in the transformative power of art and compassion.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Violet A. Newborn
