My name is Tyler Ransom. I’m a jazz guitarist and singer songwriter who is in a lifelong battle with nephrotic syndrome, an incurable kidney illness. My passion is creating music and I have an ambitious goal to spread positivity throughout the world and inspire others struggling with chronic illnesses. This fundraiser is an outreach to help me with my tuition at The New School in NYC.
I am a Jazz major and blessed to have earned a partial scholarship. I have also worked and saved for years to achieve this goal, from teaching guitar lessons, to self defense classes for teens. I’ve also worked at a dog adoption store and before Covid, performed at birthday parties. I will be working at a part-time campus job as soon as things get back to normal. As for my parents, they continue to make sacrifices, from years of payments on expensive medical bills and providing what they can for college. I am aware of what most everyone is going through during these stressful times. If at all possible, whatever you can spare will be greatly appreciated.
NEPHROTIC SYNDROME
I was diagnosed at 18 months, so it’s been a lifelong battle and I remain in the fight. When I relapse it causes my kidney’s filtering systems to shut down and leaves me with 20-30+ pounds of excess fluid on my body overnight. There have been times where I have had to take 40 pills a day, I am currently taking 6 pills. I have spent more time in and out of hospitals than I care to remember and although it is a part of my story, it does not define me.

I turned my illness into a positive by creating healingtyler.com a resource site for others who battle kidney illness. The global outreach has been humbling, as I get emails and phone calls from around the world. When I entered High School I co-authored ‘Chronically Positive! My Son’s 5 Step System To Staying Positive,’ with my dad. I then went on to speak to students at schools and community organizations. The biggest achievement, at least for now, is the release of a documentary on Amazon titled ‘In The Shed,’ that focuses on my battle against kidney illness and my music journey.
MENTORS
I am fortunate to have some very strong people in my life to guide me. My main takeaways being their work ethic, attention to detail and an unwavering belief in themselves. I watched as my dad kept grinding even when his closest friends doubted his ability to make a documentary film. Then there is someone who is like an uncle to me, WWE Hall of Fame wrestler DDP (Diamond Dallas Page). So many see the career he’s had and the success of DDPY, but so little know about all the challenges he’s faced along the way. I plan on following their lead and making a difference in the lives of others.
