Coastal Wave Basketball: Where Culture Meets the Court

Coastal Wave Basketball is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering Indigenous youth—particularly girls—through culturally safe, inclusive basketball programming across Vancouver Island.

The WSÁNEĆ QELAXEṈ, Coastal Wave Basketball’s founding team, was created to challenge inequity in sport. We provide a free, culturally grounded space where Indigenous girls can thrive, lead, and celebrate their identities.

Named after the butterfly—QELAXEṈ in SENĆOŦEN—our team embodies transformation. Girls who once sat on the sidelines now lead practices, mentor younger players, and shine with confidence and pride. Basketball in a safe space is more than a game—it is healing, leadership, and belonging.

With culturally grounded coaching, mentorship from university athletes, guidance from Elders, and cultural teachings woven into every session, QELAXEṈ girls have grown on and off the court. Through their tireless fundraising and practice, they have been able to travel to other Island communities to connect, share culture, and celebrate their love of the game.
