In January of 2017, our family was changed forever when Donald (a dad, husband and Pa) was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). This disease effects the motor neurons in the brain and causes a loss of voluntary muscle function. He has been affected by loss of muscle mass in his arms, affecting his fine motor skills, and the fatigue of muscles in his legs affecting his walking and posture.
As Donald's muscle function continues to diminish, he will soon need a handicap accessible bedroom and bathroom, fit for a wheelchair, added onto his home. The home he has raised his children in and built so many memories in will need an addition, due to the current master bedroom being on the second story of the house.
Donald and his wife, Lori, need help raising funds for this addition. They don't want to leave a house they have built so many memories in. They also want to be able to have an addition that is warm and welcoming, that will not devalue the house they have worked so hard to make a home.
In April of 1988, Donald and Lori moved into their first home. Within weeks of moving in, they found out that they were pregnant with triplets! 7 months later, their house became too small, but they made it work. It was their home. Then, three years later, Donald and Lori welcomed their fourth child into their family. With their house growing ever so small, they still managed to fit everyone. Over the past 30 years, they have celebrated birthdays, Christmases, Thanksgivings, cookouts, spaghetti dinners, graduation parties, family game nights, movie nights, and many other gatherings in this house. They have raised all their children in this house and currently are raising their 7-year-old granddaughter in the same house.
Let’s put ALS in its place and help Donald and his family build on a beautiful addition that they deserve! When family and community come together, the impossible becomes possible!
