Clinical treatment - Chronic Lyme

Donation protected

My partner Bas is suffering from Chronic Lyme Disease. Since the treatment he needs is not covered by the health insurance I have formed a team to raise money on his behave during the charity run ‘Lopen voor Lyme’. Unfortunately, the website of the charity run does not support international donations. Therefore, we want to share Bas his story here on GoFundMe, to reach as much people as possible. This is his story:

Upheaval, that's what it feels like when you’re chronically ill. Everything gets turned upside down, all your dreams and goals either have to be adjusted or forgotten. Despite living with chronic illness, I try not to focus on what I can’t do. To keep moving forward with my life, studies and just to get through the day I often need to hide my head in the sand when it comes to limitations, consequences or inabilities. Some time ago, I didn’t and watched the trailer for the documentary ‘’under our skin’’. In that trailer one person talks about how they used to love to play sports and what you lose when your health fades. That hit close to home, it reminded me of what I used to love to do before falling ill at the start of middle school.

In recent years my health has substantially deteriorated, even in light of several periods of high dosage antibiotic IV’s and other treatment. In my case this means that there’s a long and convoluted list of symptoms that are often not noticeable from the outside: almost daily crashes in which I can’t form words or thoughts, stinging pains, extreme exhaustion after very mild exercise, light and sound sensitivity, a weakened immune system but also waking screaming up in the middle of the night due to nerve pains (and scaring my better half to death).

Due to the consequences of my illness I always feel haunted by time, a feeling of always being one step behind and lacking in time to make up what I’ve already lost. Since the ‘’real world’’ doesn’t wait on you whether your health is permitting or not.

I am unable to recover what I’ve lost in pain, neurological symptoms, infections and putting my life on hold when I had no other choice. However, with intensive treatment at the BCA Clinic in Augsburg, Germany there is a chance to regain a part of my future.  It just means that I have to do something which I find very difficult: asking for help, your help. The costs associated with the treatment (€30.000) are not covered by insurance and are more than I and my family can bear. Any contribution that you can make would be extremely valuable and extremely valued by me.

I want to keep fighting.
