For the past 12 years, I (MacKenzie) have watched my dad, Clark, battle a rare cancer. He was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), back in 2008, an uncommon type of blood-cell cancer that begins in the bone marrow. This cancer typically affects older adults and is a slowly progressing condition caused by a chromosome mutation that occurs spontaneously. Like my dad, many people do not exhibit symptoms until later stages only to be discovered by routine blood work.
While the holidays are usually a time of celebration and excitement, the relapse of my dad’s cancer was on everyone’s mind. January 2020 marked the first of two, week-long hospitalizations leading to my dad’s inability to work as an in-home caregiver (which is something he loved to do stemming from taking care of his own mother who had MS).
As the weeks progressed my dad’s medical needs required my mom, Bonnie, to stay home to provide care. Due to my dad’s compromised immune system and the current state of the pandemic, it has made it harder for her to work a normal schedule. Currently, my dad is receiving medication therapy.
My husband, Austin, and I organized this fund to help with the medical bills my parents have already incurred. We anticipate his condition may lead to a transplant if he stops responding to the medication.
My mom, Bonnie Kiger, will be the beneficiary and will be withdrawing the funds on Clark’s behalf. Any support that could be provided to assist with medical costs would be deeply appreciated.
