As close friends of Ann and Jamie, we want to share with you this Go Fund Me Campaign to help with Claire’s recent medical challenges.
The Story
On September 14, after a week of illness, Claire went to the ER in Fargo and presented with concerning lab work. Of particular concern were levels related to her kidney functions and kidney failure. Claire was air flighted to Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The following day Claire underwent surgery to place a picc line and dialysis catheter. The dialysis process was started late on Tuesday and has been met with some struggles as Claire has adverse reactions to the process. For the past several days, she has undergone a dialysis treatment each morning from about 8:00 – 11:00 am.
The Diagnosis and Treatment
Claire's medical team is currently operating under the diagnosis of Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS). This is different than HUS that presents through ecoli, but rather atypical is the genetic form. It will be several weeks before this diagnosis is confirmed as they wait for the genetic testing results. Until that time, she is being treated with the medication for aHUS. If this is the confirmed diagnosis, Claire will need this medication every two weeks for the rest of her life. This medication is one of the most expensive on the market and currently costs approximately $6500 every two weeks. Along with all of you, our hearts and prayers this week have been with Team Upton as they have faced this surreal experience. And, Prayer Warriors – those prayers are working as there are daily improvements in Claire’s test results. Keep praying! In addition to praying for her medical needs, please pray for Claire as she navigates these changes as a 16 year old.
Jamie, Ann, Amorelle and Claire are filled with faith, but they need our help. If you know Team Upton, you know that they are selfless in their acts of kindness towards others and now it's time for us to show them our love and support.
This GoFundMe is being set up to help Claire and her family with expenses such as the air flight, medications and housing for Jamie and Ann while they are in Sioux Falls. Unfortunately, the Ronald McDonald house is closed due to COVID-19, so they are faced with finding their own housing. It is anticipated that Claire will be there several weeks. In addition, Claire has no confirmed diagnosis and, depending on the outcome, may have a lifetime of expenses related to medical treatment.
