Medical & Foster Needs for Ollie

Donation protected
Hello. My name is Shelley Gosney. I reside in Atlanta GA and have a personal calling to help animals in need. In the past 10 years I have personally rescued, fostered and found safe loving homes for a combined total of 28 dogs and cats all on my own. Up until now I've covered almost 100% of the expenses associated with each of these animals initial needs which has included vaccinations, spay/neutering, any special medicial needs, microchipping, all provisional costs while I'm personally caring and fostering them and even travel expenses as I've driven and even flown both cats and dogs to homes I've found for them that are several States away.

My most recent find is a sweet and happy 2 year old blue brindle pit bull I now call Ollie.

Here's Ollie's story

On the morning of Satuday Feburary 8th, 2016 I was running errands in my car and spotted Ollie standing on the side of a road. I immediately pulled over to investigate. He had a harness on and looked to be in good condition suggesting he was definitely someone's dog, had not been out long and was either lost or sadly, possibly dumped.  I then encountered a woman, Catherine, who had been walking her own dogs and told me before I arrived on the scene Ollie had a brief episode where he  would "shake and drool".

Thankfully Briarcliff Animal Clinic (Johnson Rd. location) was right around the corner so Catherine and I worked together to get Ollie to their clinic with the intention of seeing if he was microchipped in hopes of reuniting him with his owner. Unfortunately he was not microchipped and while at the vet he began to seize (which was the shaking and drooling as explained by the Catherine who was the first one to see Ollie). The vet explained the seizures were most likely caused by one of the following: 1) Rabies 2) Ingested something toxic while out on his own. 3) Epilepsy

Catherine and I immediately made the decision to financially split the initial medical costs to have Briarcliff Animal Clinic hospitalize him to rule out rabies, start treating him for possible toxicity and to administer anti-seizure medication to hopefully stop the seizures and to eliminate his immediate suffering.  After 4 days of hospitilation Ollie was then moved to general boarding where he remained until the 10th day when DeKalb Animal Control confirmed no one was looking for him and gave me permissions to take possession, foster and find a safe loving home for him. Because Ollie was not neutred when we found him I then decided to have Ollie neutered

The good news is Ollie did not have rabies and after being treated for toxicity and weened off the anti seizure medication he stopped seizing.

for 6 weeks so we were hopeful the initial seizures had been caused by him ingesting something toxic while he was on the streets. This initial expense was almost $1,000.00

Unbeknownst to me, the vet informed me that a fair amount of dogs suffer from idiopathic seizures which can happen as infrequently as 1x per year, every 6 months, etc. For dogs that have seizures infrequently as this medication is not recommended. But for dogs that have what is called "cluster seizures", 1 or more daily or weekly,  medication is required to control - eliminate the seizures and they go on to live healty happy lives with little side effects from the newer anti seizure medicines.

Before I could take possession of Ollie, with the intent of fostering him and finding a home for him,  I was required to wait 10 days by Dekalb Animal Control to insure his owner was not in fact tryng to find him. During this time I decided to keep Ollie @ Briarcliff Animal Clinin in general boarding for them to continue to observe him and to neuter him once we cleared the required 10 day holding  by Dekalb Animal Control ( the last thing I wanted to do was neuter Ollie and then his owner show up to claim him and be angy I'd neutered him).
