CJ's Motorcycle Accident - Medical Costs

June 15th was intended to be an easy, laid back Saturday for my brother CJ. The weather was perfect, so he decided to hop on the motorcycle and ride to my house. Nearing the end of this ride, however, CJ swerved to avoid an object in the road and found himself catapulting into a telephone pole. Sadly, the impact burst his T12 and L1 vertebrae thereby severing his spinal cord. This injury left him completely paralyzed from the waist down. Fortunately, he was wearing gear which protected him from other injuries besides some scrapes and bruises.

The next several weeks sped by. He was flown from the scene to Vanderbilt Trauma ICU where he spent the next two weeks getting spinal surgery (fusing T9-L3 to support his spinal column), developed a bowel obstruction, and was treated for a minor infection. Finally, he was cleared by his doctors, and on June 28th he was admitted to a local rehab facility in Nashville to begin working on physical and occupational therapy. He has made HUGE progress there and is expected to be discharged in the next week or two!

We have seen CJ's family and friends come together in a truly moving way, and we are eternally grateful. He will need continued support in the coming weeks and months as he reintegrates back into home and work life. The cost of hospitalization and rehab are building quickly, and there are plenty of costs to be expected with medical supplies and home modification.
