Citizen's Kitchen

Citizen's Kitchen is a grassroots wartime meal operation started by sister team Aliya and Shaendl. Originally from Berkeley, California, the sisters immigrated to Israel and provide cooking lessons to tourists from all over the world from their Tel Aviv-based studio, Citrus and Salt.

When the war broke out on October, 7th, the sisters put out a call for volunteers and started cooking. Dozens of people showed up, with more and more coming every day after that. Outgrowing the small cooking studio, the sisters moved to a nearby restaurant that generously donated their space, and then the new Citrus and Salt studio.

Together with volunteers, Citizen's Kitchen prepares up to 500 warm meals a day for those in need, including displaced families, low-income citizens struggling as a result of the war, and others affected by the current conflict.

In addition, as many of Citizen's Kitchen volunteers are olim (new Jewish immigrants), the volunteer effort has turned into a community that provides comfort for those looking for support in difficult times. Citizen's Kitchen hosts Shabbat dinners and events that help keep our community strong and united while creating light to combat the darkness.
