Cinnamon’s Serious Medical Issues

Cinnamon Sugar NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Cinnamon is now 7 years old. For the last 5-6 years she has been bothered by her...well...her rear end.  The vet thought it was her anal glands (I know, yuck!) and prescribed adding fiber to her diet, which we did. It made no difference. The problem continued to get worse and worse.

In mid-2017, the problem escalated seriously. It started with her being unable to get comfortable. She would quickly dart from place to place, trying to get away from the pain. She would quickly turn and chew furiously at her hind quarters.

In late 2017, she started having “pain attacks.” She would be sitting, walking, even sleeping and suddenly dart around shrieking in pain. It’s as close to a scream a dog can muster. She wouldn’t let anyone touch her until the episode passed. At this point, we knew the problem was much more serious than irritation. The vet ran blood tests and took x-rays.  He consulted with an orthopedic surgeon.

The situation was dire. She has the worst case of hip dysplasia he had ever seen. She also has advanced arthritis in her hips as a result. He recommended a double hip replacement. At a minimum of $13,000, this is an expense we cannot afford. So the vet started her on arthritis meds and Rimidil, an anti-inflammatory for pain.

However, this did nothing to stop the episodes of severe pain, which spread to her front paw. At this point, we knew this was neurological. We started her on neurology meds, which helped at first, but soon became ineffective. More meds were added and dosages were increased. Again, each change helped, but soon stopped working at an increased rate.

Earlier this  month she had the most severe episode ever. She was shrieking and trying to run from the pain, limping because she was holding one front paw up. She finally let me hold her, at which point she started whimpering and shaking. I rubbed all the sore spots, which she seemed to appreciate, but the whimpers and shaking continued for approximately 30 minutes. An appointment was immediately made with a veterinary neurologist, but before the appointment, she had another episode.  That was two in 72 hours.

She spent all day at the local veterinary hospital with the neurologist, having a full workup done.  This included a full physical exam, multiple blood tests, and MRI scans from brain to tail. The news is not good. First off, she needs that double hip replacement NOW. It can no longer wait. In addition, there is no clear answer regarding the sudden pain episodes. There are some theories we are testing out one at a time. She is on 3 new meds, in addition to all of her previous meds. Expenses are as follows:

Double-hip replacement: $13,000 (surgery only)
Physical therapy and aftercare: $10,000
Vet hospital bill last week: $3,700
Future vet/hospital bills: (unknown)
Monthly medications: $200/mo
