This winter, Cindy Sun’s family was stricken with a cancer diagnosis for the second time in four years.

Cindy is a mom of two young boys (David, 8 years old and Kevin, 4 years old). She is the only child of her parents. Like many traditional Chinese families, her parents live with her and provide much needed care for their grandchildren. In 2013, Cindy’s second son Kevin came into the world and brought tremendous joy to the family. Cindy’s mother then underwent a routine CT scan as part of the application to extend her visa. Unfortunately, she tested positive for Stage II lung cancer at the age of 63. Cindy made the critical decision to support her mother in her fight with cancer while working full time to provide the major income for the family. After intensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the cancer cells were stable, but her mum has to take oral chemotherapy for the rest of her life. Her mum has stayed with Cindy’s family for more than two years now, and remains strong and optimistic, despite coping daily with the side effects of the chemotherapy.

Just as the family was getting used to this new reality, cancer struck the family again. In November 2017, a routine physical exam revealed that Cindy’s father had rectal cancer. He immediately underwent surgery in China during which a section of the intestine was removed for a biopsy pathology. His father was diagnosed with Stage II rectal cancer, and he is now undergoing chemotherapy.  

Cindy is a master planner in an international multi-disciplinary firm. After discovering her situation, the office generously supported Cindy, allowing her to work from home and providing her with a flexible work schedule so that she could take care of her children. Cindy’s husband is in China looking after his father-in-law.

The medical expense that Cindy had to cover has been more than $20,000. There is on-going cost of approximately $5000 per month for both of her parents for the duration of  the chemotherapy treatment. Her father is expected to complete eight cycles of treatment as per the doctor’s suggestion.
