Medical expenses for heart transplant

Donation protected
In the process of getting Ron placed on the heart transplant list we have come up with some unexpected expenses.  Ron thought he had everything accounted for until  the latest expenses were placed before us.

On October of 2013 Ron was in the hospital for congestive heart failure; after a short walk in the hallway he flat lined.  After the hospital doctors and nurses brought him back to life, it was determined that his only treatment option was to be transferred to the Heart and Vascular Institute at Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center, Houston. Tests determined that his only chance of long term survival was a heart transplant.   Thinking that he was just going to get heart bypass surgery it was a shock to all the family.  The only problem is Ron was morbidly obese along with having a failing heart.  The doctors decided to implant a LVAD (Left Ventricle Assist Device) and perform a gastric bypass at the same time.  This operation had been performed at other hospitals but not at Memorial Herrmann.  After many discussions with the insurance company, the surgery was approved and performed on 11/21/2013.  Needless to say it has been a struggle for him but one that I can say he is winning.  He weighed 389 pounds the day of the surgery and the doctors didn’t have a lot of hope that he could lose the weight necessary to be placed on the transplant list.  He is winning the weight reduction war and has now qualified to be placed on the transplant list.  He has lost 150 pounds, and as of today, and he still losing.

Everything was on track to have the final workup for the transplant list back in April of this year , however he fell, broke his arm, and cracked his skull.  He spent another month in the hospital until the bleeding on his brain was stopped.

He has now undergone the final tests to be placed on the list.  We are thankful that he will be placed on the list this month.

We need your help.  There have been expenses that we never anticipated and it has Ron upset beyond words.  The social worker assigned to him told us about this site and encouraged us to post our story.

Ron never dreamed that he would have to ask others to help in his treatment.  We wouldn’t have been able to get through this process if it wasn’t for the prayers and encouraging words of friends.  The last thing we would want is to be an inconvenience to anyone.  We are asking that you pray whether you can help or not.  Any amount, large or small, will be appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.  Please understand that if you do not feel the urge to help, we will never think less of you.  We understand that money is tight.  Ron will continue to post his musings and progress on his Facebook account.

Bless each of you, and remember above all, to tell the people around you that you love them!!!
