On July 11, 2014, Chuck Kalkbrenner had a sudden cardiac arrest. Due to the lack of oxygen to his brain, Chuck sustained anoxic brain injury which affects his ability to concentrate, make decisions, focus, and his language. Chuck also has long term and short term memory loss causing much confusion.
After spending two weeks in the Cardiac I.C.U. and one week on the Cardiac floor at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, Chuck was transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation and Research Hospital. At TIRR, Chuck received between three to five hours of therapy each day along with a twenty-hour nurse. He was there for a month and 8 days.
Thanks to everyone that donated, we were able to pay for a month of post-acute care. Chuck was transferred on Tuesday, September 9th, to Touchstone which is a neurorecovery facility in Conroe, Texas. One month stay at Touchstone costs $30,000 and the average amount of time for anoxic brain injury patients is two months. At Touchstone, the doctors and therapists are making an individualized therapy plan for Chuck's recovery. His family prays that continued therapy at Touchstone will increase his progress and ultimately give him a better quality of life.
Many of his family and friends have asked how they can help. You can help by donating to his family so that they can have the financial resources to get him the additional therapy he needs. If you do not have the means to donate, please keep Chuck and his family in your prayers. His family believes that God is the ultimate healer and will heal Chuck's brain in his own time. However, additional therapy can definately help the process.
