This Christmas we would like to help the Youth For Christ Center in Guinea Bissau to provide, for the very first time ever, a Christmas celebration meal, to honor those who with servant hearts have contributed to its mission. We would also love to be able to support their overall ministry, so we would be ever so grateful for your support.
The Youth for Christ (YFC) Guinea Bissau is part of the greater YFC movement and was founded in the year 2000. Ever since it has impacted the lives of thousands of young people across the country. The primary focus of the YFC is to evangelize the youth and empower them through prayer, discipleship and professional skills to become agents of change in their own communities and local churches, for the Glory of God.
The YFC Guinea Bissau has a training Center which offers: English, French, IT and Instruments/music classes, as well as sports facilities and a library. Furthermore, a theology course is also administered on those premises. The students are from the poorest and most marginalized youth in Guinea Bissau. Therefore, the fees charged for the classes are very low. All classes are used as ministering opportunities, and all the content includes biblical passages. The classes always start and end with a word of prayer. In addition, the Center also has rooms which serve as a hostel as well as a cafeteria. The fees received from the hostel facilities and the classes allow the Center to get its own revenue which help keep it running.
The Center has recently decided to expand its reach beyond its facilities by creating specific evangelization and discipleship projects, which include door-to-door evangelization. From January - March 2020 the evangelization team reached 100 youth out of which 75 accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. All the new converts reached by the evangelization team, were being discipled during the entire project. The Center partners with local churches in this follow up, while providing these new believers the opportunity to be connected with the family of God. This work was interrupted due to Covid 19 pandemic.
The YFC Center has no financial support from the State, and the fees charged for the classes are barely sufficient to cover the core costs of the Center, namely, teachers’ salaries, acquisition of education material/equipment, and rehabilitation of its facilities. Further, the lockdown imposed in the State of Guinea Bissau to address Covid 19, has depleted the reserves of the Center, given that though the Center was closed during this period, teachers were still paid a small subsidy to help them and their families.
