My mom is currently at Bryn Mawr Hospital on a ventilator battling severe pneumonia. We did not expect things were so bad when she admitted herself on 12/18. By 12/20, she was moved to ICU and we were told she needed to be put on a ventilator. We are unsure for how long she will need to stay on it as her oxygen levels were not good when she admitted herself. This was not anticipated to be as serious as it now is. We are being told she will have a long recovery possibly needing rehab due to being immobile after the treatment she is undergoing with the ventilation. There is discussion of possible tracheostomy for longer term oxygenation.
A little background: She had pneumonia this time last year as well and never felt like she was back to normal. She saw a pulmonologist in October and they recommended for her to have a bronchoscopy, but since she lost her insurance she was not able to have the procedure. For those of you who do not know, she is the caregiver for my 17 year old niece Cheyenne who has type 1 diabetes. I am starting to see this as a long road to recovery for my mom. She is essentially a single mother, and she will get behind on rent, electric, and other misc. bills being the only income for her and Cheyenne. I do not want her to be burdened as she might not get back to work for a while if at all. Please help whatever you feel led to do and please keep my family in your prayers.
