Hello! My name is Christian Harvey and I am from Riverdale, Georgia. I am currently a senior music performance major at Columbus State University. I am writing because I desperately need your help to purchase a professional bass before I start my master’s degree in music! This is simply not possible for me given my very limited financial resources.
Growing up, my family could not afford a quality instrument nor lessons. Despite this, I worked hard and had the motivation like no other to become the best player I could be. Within three years of starting the instrument, I was able to become the Principal Bass of the Georgia All-State Orchestra. I participated in countless memorable experiences without a private teacher, including performing at Carnegie Hall in New York at the age of 16! Through tremendous determination, I received a full-ride scholarship to the Schwob School of Music. Now, I need to find a way to purchase a bass of my own that I can grow with as an artist.
The instrument I need is a Martin Sheridan Double Bass It has a longer fingerboard and a low C-Extension, which allows me to play much higher and much lower notes than my current bass can. With an instrument like this, I will have everything I need to have a very successful life and career as a professional double bassist, bringing beauty to the world at a time when we need it. I have the ability, but I need a voice - and this bass would be that voice.
Many people have never seen a double bass, never heard it perform solo repertoire, and mainly, have never seen a young, black kid performing classical music. Growing up, there were no classical musicians (especially double bassists) that looked, dressed, or talked like me. I hope to inspire other kids like me to become musicians, to love music the way I do, and to give back to communities in need at every turn.
Please enjoy this performance of the Vanhal Double Bass Concerto by the Sewanee Summer Music Festival!
