In April 2015 Chris was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. After consulting with his urologist at home, it was felt that Chris should be seen at MD Anderson. On April 27th, Chris underwent a radical nephrectomy at MD Anderson. 4 months following surgery, the cancer had spread to his lungs and some lymph nodes in his chest and abdomen.
For 19 months he treated at MD Anderson with an oral targeted chemotherapy medication which rid his lungs of the cancer. In May 2017, it was determined that the cancer in the lymph nodes was growing and Chris was started on an immunotherapy trial. This treatment boosted Chris' immune system, but didn't stabilize the cancer in his lymph node. He also developed a pulmonary embolism from the immunotherapy. Chris' physicians at MD Anderson felt it was time to take a break from systemic treatment and remove the largest cancerous lymph node in his abdomen near his aorta and vena cava. There are additional lymph nodes that are cancerous, but those are more than likely unable to be removed during this surgery.
Chris had surgery on November 27th at MD Anderson. There is no "cure" for renal cell carcinoma but treatment is currently targeted at preventing further metastasis of the exciting cancer in ones body. 6 weeks after surgery CT scans will be obtained and at that time a new plan of treatment for Chris will be determined.
Chris is a loving husband and incredible father of two beautiful girls. He has remained positive during this entire process. His courage and determination to fight his illness has been remarkable. He is not one to seek assistance, rather, he is the one always willing to help others.
As most of us know, the cost of medical care can be overwhelming, especially with a serious medical condition. We are asking for your help in supporting Chris during this difficult time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
