Rebuilding Family Home

Håfa Adai everyone,

On May 25th, 2023 typhoon Mawar hit my home island of Guåhan (Guam) and the rest of its sister islands in the Marianas. As a result, many families, including my own have been affected and are in need of immediate financial support and resources to help rebuild our homes.

Before the typhoon hit, my Grandpa was admitted to Guam Memorial Hospital under critical condition. He's 83 years old and lives alone on our family property, so no one was around to help him prepare the house for Mawar before him getting sick. He stayed in the hospital during the heat of the storm and remained safe. As of right now, he is temporarily staying with my aunt while we figure out housing repairs. Unfortunately, our home was damaged with parts of the roof missing, and is now without power or running water so I'm not too sure how long it will take for us to fully repair everything due to financial constraints.

Currently, the majority of my family is in Washington State and we are planning to send my dad home to help fix the house and also take care of my grandpa. However, even if he did fly home, there would be no roof to house him as well. Many families throughout our islands are suffering and are in need of help right now, and if I could also offer something in return, as chenchule' I am more than happy to donate food, clothes, or small pockets of money in return.

Anything would be helpful as of right now. I know it would take some time to fully repair my family home, but even $1.00 would be a huge support.

Update: Un donkulu na Saina Ma’åse’ everyone for helping my family. With the donations, my family and I were able to contribute to the repairs of my grandpa’s house (buying tin roofing, hosing for the bathroom, wood panels, etc), which also included repairing his car. My grandpa is currently under the care of my aunty and dad since I had to leave Guåhan for college, but his health is recovering as we go. FEMA provided some resources that also made a huge impact, and we are still in the process of waiting for his SBA loan to properly rebuild the house after being told it was unlivable. As of right now, my family is patiently waiting for papers to process and are more than grateful for the amount of support that was provided throughout our recovery ❤️
