Charlotte’s cranial helmet fund

Donation protected
As most of you know, this summer we welcomed our second baby girl into this world. Charlotte was born a happy healthy baby, and we were even able to fly Justin back home for 2 weeks for paternity leave (he has been gone from our family since the week of Christmas 2016) from the Army before he deployed to the Middle East.

Around charlottes 2 month doctors appointment, her pediatrician noticed the backside of her head had a flat spot. We monitored this until her 3 month appointment to see if it would self correct with repositioning. However, it didn’t correct itself and it actually got a little worse.

We were referred to the MU children’s therapy center for physical therapy to work on correcting the flat spot. At our first appointment it was noticed that Charlottes head / neck was tilting more than usual to her left side. She was diagnosed with infant Torticollis (neck muscle tightness - she also has tightness in her torso on the same side) as well as the diagnosis of Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome).. After 2 months of therapy, we were sent to a plastic surgeon to do an evaluation for the use of a cranial molding helmet to correct the flat spot. During this appointment the doctor showed great concern for her torticollis and has referred Charlotte to see a pediatric ophthalmologist to see if it is ocular torticollis; meaning Charlotte is tilting her head in attempt to correct her field of vision.. After doing scans of her head, Charlottes diagnosis of plagiocephaly was also changed to Plagiocephaly with Brachycephaly.

Our reasoning for creating this GoFundMe is because as you know, my husband is in the Army, and sadly the molding helmet is seen as a cosmetic device and it is not covered by our insurance with Tricare. That means the helmet, which costs over $2,000 is completely out of pocket. The molding helmet will not only correct the shape of Charlottes head but it will correct her facial asymmetry and prevent the problems that it could cause her in the future.

This came at us at an awful time because we are weeks away from Justin’s return from deployment and our move to Texas to his duty station. We aren’t the type to reach out for help, we usually can figure things out on our own and get it taken care of but this is a rare case and involves our daughters health. We want anyone to know that if you feel it in your heart to donate to this fund, it is extremely appreciated and we would be very thankful for it.

If you are unable to donate, sharing this on your Facebook or with your family/friends would be appreciated as well! Thanks for taking the time to read Charlottes story :)
