Charlie & his surgery

Donation protected

Excuse my language, but I feel like an absolute asshole even doing this.

There are people who are dying and can’t afford food, healthcare, etc. and I feel like the stupidest person alive who cares too much about their dog. But here I am I guess.

Charlie is 3 years old and was born with a disorder where he gets hernias easily (we had no idea when we adopted him from the shelter almost two years ago). About a month ago, he turned into a completely different dog. After a few weeks of trying to figure it out, our vet discovered he had two hernias, one in his diaphragm and one in his pericardial sac (the sac around his heart). His spleen went into the the pericardial sac, causing it to fill with fluid. They drained the fluid (costing about $1500, which some will be covered by insurance) but he has to have a one-time surgery to move his spleen back to its normal positioning and then he will be a healthy dog again.

I’ve gone back & forth about this, wondering if I should put him down. No vets in Spokane that we know of do payment plans, so this is why we're here. People mentioned starting a GoFundMe to me, and it made me cringe. How could I ever do that knowing that I took on this responsibility when I adopted him?

The reality is that Charlie has pretty much saved my life. I have spent my time in college severely depressed, and he was the only thing that could get me out of bed for a really long time. Anyone who knows me knows that he isn’t just a dog, but honestly one of the only things that has kept me alive & continuing on. So I guess here I am, asking people IF THEY FEEL MOVED TO or if they have a passion about dogs & helping them, if they are willing to give for him to be able to have the surgery and live. It’s about upward of $4,000, which is absolutely insane and ridiculous, but I guess that’s how it is and how the system is. He can wait to have the surgery for a few more weeks, but our vet has said that the sooner we do it the better, before more fluid builds up around his heart.

This is the last possible thing I wanted to do, but considering his contribution to my life I figured I should do everything I can to help his.
