Update - December 2018

It has now been TWO years since we launched this campaign and it continues to have been the most important factor in ensuring our continued work with the youth of Rocinha.  2018 was a very tumultuous year in Brazil and next year is promising even more uncertainty, especially for the favelas of Rio. There is no doubt that Rocinha will be receiving a lot of attention and we hope that comes in the form of investments in health, education and social services, but we also have seen first hand that armed conflict is usually a precursor to any other government intervention.

Small projects like ours are fundamental in help[ing keep favela youth in a safe a positive environment amid the chaos and violence that has become more and more common in Rio.  This year we survived by the skin of our teeth, but have still made progress as a project. Some of our highlights of the year were:

- Jonas spent 3 months in Sweden on a foreign exchange program we setup with a partner there.

- Caio and Humberto are now employed part time at an outdoor adventure park that we partner with

- We partnered with a local school and now have 5 new fixed students, including three girls

- All 4 of our students that we enrolled in a english class passed yearly exams and  will move on to a new level next year.

- Rodrigo and Caio participated in a professional training course for solar panel installation through a course that a local partner of ours runs.

- We worked closely with the local climbing federation to help keep the climbing access open on the Irmão Maior formation that neighbours Rocinha.

- We inaugurated our first film club  that will occur every month, showing politically and socially provocative films to our youth with debate sessions occurring afterwards.

- Gabriel, who recently come in 2nd place in a local climbing competition,  is now our new scholarship member of our mentorship program and is responsible for opening the climbing gym, finishing his studies, climbing outdoors, participating in competitions as well as professional skills training programs.  Welcome Biel!

We hope next year will be even better and that we can raise enough funding to open up more classes, especially an all female climbing class.  We also want to get more of our youth into the pro climbing competitions  that will be happening all over the country next year.  We do need your help though to keep this schools doors open. Even with reduced costs from last year we are still constantly struggling to cover our monthly costs:

Monthly costs: R$2100 (US$550) / rent: R$1500, 4 scholarships for our mentor program R$600

Many thanks to everyone that has supported over the years and please help us keep this dream alive!

Update - Thank You!

It’s been a year since we launched this campaign and thanks to dozens of generous donors we have managed to meet over half of our goal!  These funds have gone directly to covering the costs of scholarships for three of our youth mentors Caio, Mateus and Jonas and have been fundamental in guaranteeing the continued operation of our community space in Rocinha.

Our scholarship program focuses on supporting these youth as they finish their schooling, as well as creating roles and responsibilities that help prepare them for future challenges.  The youth mentors are responsible for opening our climbing wall three times a week, ensuring that dozens of other young people from Rocinha can climb and benefit from our project.  They also must climb once a week outside on the rock, not only beginning to fulfill the minimum requirements for a guiding certification, but also to encourage them to be more proactive, self reliant and adventurous in their own city.  Beyond this, they are enrolled in an extra curricular English program, have access to a tutor and educational mentor to help them through school as well as participate in a variety of different life skills and professionalization programs we partner with.

With mounting economic and social burdens, these sorts of initiatives are incredibly important for ensuring that at-risk youth have the chance to develop in a healthy and positive environment, receiving the education and role modeling that can provide them with the tools they need to be successful adults.  This importance has been brought back into the spotlight in Rocinha recently as the neighborhood became entrenched in weeks of gang and police warfare, shutting down schools, commerce and social programs, as well as resulting in dozens of deaths and a military occupation of the favela.

Read more about the situation in Rocinha here...

We believe that small community programs like ours are fundamental to helping counter balance these challenges. We are in the process of exploring other more long term funding opportunities for 2018, but still need your help to maintain our operations for the first semester of next year.

Our scholarship programs to support these three youth mentors currently costs U$550 per month

Please help us ensure the success of this program and the continued operations of our climbing wall.  Donations of any value are helpful and welcome.   All of us here at C.E.U. thank you all for the continued support!

Centro de Escalada Urbana is a climbing outreach program that works with disadvantaged youth from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.  Beyond sharing our passion for climbing, our goal is to use this complex sport as a tool to teach self awareness and pass on essential life skills that can help disadvantaged youth tackle the diverse challenges they face on a daily basis. We aim to use climbing as a social catalyst to promote mental and physical health, culture and environmental awareness.

C.E.U. was originally founded in 2010 and is currently run by a volunteer team of professional climbing instructors and guides.  We offer both indoor and outdoor climbing programs 4 times a week with 15 – 20 youth. We are currently based in the favela of Rocinha and have plans to expand to other favelas in 2017.

Our main goals are:

-       To use climbing to improve the quality of living, health, fitness and self esteem of favela youth ages 10 to 20 years old

-       Promote postitive experiences and adventures that broaden their presectives and give them opportunities to learn how to manage risk and fear, as well as enhance self-awareness and independence.

-       Create and maintain a safe and accessible space where different climbing related courses and workshops can be offered.

- Expand our mentorship program that provides training and work experience necessary to pursue climbing related careers that include guiding, industrial rope access and adventure tourism.

The funds raised through this campaign will help cover operational costs of the program in 2017, specifically:

-       Climbing wall space rental and maintenance

-       Mentorship programs for youth mentors

-       Transportation and food costs for outings

-       Expanding the climbing program and constructing new indoor climbing walls in other favelas

Help us share our passion for climbing with the favela youth in Rio de Janeiro!  Thanks for your support.
