Philadelphia has a rich Irish musical tradition. Drop into any traditional Irish music session anywhere in the Delaware Valley, and you'll know just what we're talking about. Fathers sit in with sons. Sisters bang out tunes with brothers. Eighty-year-olds share jigs and reels with 10-year-olds. Now, that's tradition.
Here's the problem: If you don't frequent the sessions, or if you don't attend area concerts, you might not realize what a treasure we have within our midst. Philadelphia is home to some of the most exciting Irish music on the planet, but a lot of it has never been captured and preserved.
Our solution ... Ceili Drive: The Music of Irish Philadelphia, a CD recording project featuring rollicking tunes from heretofore unheralded players, and sweet songs by the unsung heroes of Philadelphia Irish music.
There's a raw excitement and energy to the music played in pubs and concerts. Our goal was nothing less than to harness lightning in a bottle.
We've wrapped up recording, and the great news is: We think we've really done it.
We brought together three of Philadelphia's major musical families, the Boyces, the Brennans, and the McGillians; three rising stars under the age of 13 who've already competed twice in the All-Irelands; plus a stellar group of Irish-born musicians who now call Philadelphia home.
Up to this point, we've funded all of the recording out of pocket. Now we need help tying up all the loose ends, so we can release the CD, hopefully in early September. The loose ends in question: mixing and mastering, and CD design and duplication. We hope you can help us finish this labor of love.
Please support worthy project, which benefits irishphiladelphia.com. And thanks to Facebook fan Pete McDermott for suggesting the name!
