KATHY SALTCHEV is a friend, mother, wife, daughter, sister, and professional. She helped establish the Bulgarian School in San Antonio and was a big part of Bulgarians In Texas fundraising efforts, cooking school and Christmas productions. Her family was the recipient of the 2013 Bulgarians in Texas recognition award for their efforts in the community. She has two elementary school age children (Kassi and Niko) and is married to my good friend Milan.
Recently Kathy experienced a TRAGEDY. In October 2013 she started suffering of bad headaches. In January 2014 it was determined that she had a TUMOR growing in and around the brain-stem. In February 2014 she had surgery to remove the tumor. The surgery was a success for the first 15 minutes of recovery but her respiratory system crashed and she was intubated. As a result of cyst fluid attacking the brainstem, her body was PARALYZED from the shoulders down. After waking up from sedation, she was left with hearing, double vision, neck movement, and slight movement in her left finger and toe tips. She spent all of February in ICU. For the last 5 months she has been in rehab treatment. In March she whispered her first two words, started moving her right leg, removed the trachea, and started eating pureed food. In April, she started getting around by wheelchair, eating chopped meals, and increasing the strength in her voice. She continues to work on gaining muscle control from her home, hopes to get back to normal as soon as possible and end the NIGHTMARE that has now lasted 7 months.
In the meanwhile, Milan has picked up all duties at home, working and providing, supporting the family financially and emotionally. He had to take the kids out of their school and enroll them in a closer school in order to manage his increased responsibilities. Spring semester came and went, summer passed and it’s time for the kids to go back to school. That means shopping for new school clothes and supplies on top of the piling medical bills. This is where we come in!
