The Canadian Federal Corrections Memorial is a national monument to honour the sacrifices of Correctional Service of Canada employees killed in the line of duty dating back to 1870. The monument will memorialize all correctional staff who lost their lives protecing Canadians. The monument will recognize 34 fallen staff killed to date.
This monument will be located on Correctional Service of Canada property in Kingston, Ontario just north of Kingston Penitentiary, formerly the oldest federal penitentiary in Canada and now a National Historic Site. Ten of the 34 fallen were from the Kingston area, at one time home to nine federal institutions.
Current designs for the monument include a semi-circle structure based on the dimensions of an observation tower similar to those at Kingston Pen. The wall will feature plaques depicting the likeness of the fallen member, their name, rank, institution, and dates of birth and death.
A commitee of correctional staff and community volunteers have been working dilligently on raising money for this monument for several years through a variety of fundraisers. So far, we have raised approximately $20,000 but need significant additional support to help make this monument a reality. The committee is working with Campbell Monuments of Belleville, Ontario to design and build the momument. This is the same firm that created the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial in Trenton, Ontario.
The commitee's goal is to unveil the new monument on July 7, 2020, the 150th anniversary of the first line of duty death.
All donations are managed by the Canadian Federal Corrections Memorial Committee, a registered charitable organization. Please consider donating to this most worthwhile cause to remember and honour these peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect Canadians.
