Study Abroad to New Zealand

This semester I took the exciting opportunity to study abroad. I will be attending Massey University in Manawatu, New Zealand--an opportunity I never deemed possible in the past. I am very fortunate and blessed to have the opportunity to experience a culture so different from our own. I leave February 13th and return in late June. I’m a Gates Millennium Scholar so my program fees are fully funded. I’m enormously thankful for my scholarship but unfortunately; it doesn’t pay for my travel to and from New Zealand. I’m requesting for your assistance to help with my plane ticket. The cost of the air ticket is $2,500 for a round trip. I’m asking for your contribution to fulfill my goal of $1,500 to help towards my travel expenses. The deadline to pay my plane ticket off is February 6th. Hopefully, I will have all the funds to purchase my ticket by then. I’m currently raising funds on my own to pay for the remaining amount. I would greatly appreciate your help in assisting me in my journey abroad as I discover, explore, and learn about the world outside of South Dakota--this is time for personal growth and self-discovery. Especially because this will be the furthest I'll be traveling on my own and also my first time traveling out of the country! Any contributions will be of tremendous assistance, every little bit helps. Your assistance in making this endeavor possible is extremely appreciated.

I’m Oglala Lakota and an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. I was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I’m a 2015 graduate from Pine Ridge High School. I’m a junior at the University of South Dakota. I’m pursuing a degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice with a minor in addiction studies. My ultimate goals are to utilize my knowledge, leadership, and experiences to make a difference on the reservation, with specific interest on empowering the youth in the community. I do my best to positively and respectfully represent the Oglala Sioux Tribe in all of my academic endeavors and I intend to do the same while abroad in New Zealand. I hope to gain valuable insights and knowledge of the indigenous people and culture of New Zealand. I want to build connections between our two cultures and observe the similarities and differences and then use them to benefit our people. I feel I can equally benefit and grow academically, professionally, and personally by studying abroad. This will definitely be an experience of a lifetime.
It’d be a great honor to experience a different country and culture and represent the Oglala Lakota Nation. I appreciate each and every one who chooses to donate. Thank you all for supporting me in my adventures!
