We have created this GoFundMe event to help Catur Sang Klana Wijaya realize his dream of studying music and culture in Mali. Many of you know Catur as a warm and generous-spirited friend, and also as a totally dedicated and hard-working musician, interested in a wide range of cultural music and instruments. Over the last few years, Catur has continued to deepen his interest in West African rhythms and instruments, practising with his colleagues and studying at and accompanying drum workshops in Bali. Although he works as hard as possible, initiating projects, bands and events and supporting others in their traditional and contemporary musical endeavours, it is extremely difficult for him to support himself, (as well as family members), as a musician in Indonesia - let alone save to study in West Africa. The money raised here will allow Catur to visit Mali in January and February 2018 – the season of most festivals and cultural events. It will pay for his airfare, visas, vaccinations, land transport, accommodation, festival entry, instrument lessons, and if possible, an instrument or two. Whatever you can give, Catur is sure to return 10-fold in his musical generosity to everyone. Thank you!
The founders of this campaign, for those interested, are Anne Harkin and Simon Fraser. We met and played with Catur in Melbourne in 2015, and in Bali in 2015 and 2016. We have also played with him and seen him perform in Bali in 2015 and 16 and will do so again in 2017.
