From the beginning...

As a mother, Catherine O'Leary was constantly on the go - always putting others first before herself. Despite complaining of constant hiccups and headaches for more than a year.

Following surgery to remove a brain tumour, Catherine was diagnosed with "Locked-In-Syndrome."

Like every mom, Catherine's life revolved around her loving son Brandon. There was never a second the doting mother stopped talking about her son.

The growth was only discovered after Catherine pleaded with hospital chiefs for a brain scan.

As well as the headaches, the 31 year old suffered persistent hiccups for three years before she was properly diagnosed.

Catherine, of Drom an Oir, Kilmoney, Carrigaline, Co Cork, sued the HSE for alleged negligence through her father.

It was claimed that, since surgery for the removal of a brain tumour on Jan 31, 2008, at Cork University Hospital, Catherine’s physical and mental capacities have been catastrophically impaired.

It was further claimed that had a brain tumour diagnosis been made on Catherine — who had first sought help for continuous hiccups three years earlier — and surgery carried out, it was very probable she would have avoided catastrophic brain injury.

It was further alleged there was negligence in carrying out a pre-operative embolisation on or about Jan 31, 2008, prior to brain surgery and permitting Catherine to contract the MRSA virus while in hospital. The HSE denied the claims.

Catherine was awarded her €2.5million in damages against the HSE. The settlement was made without admission of liability.

2nd September 2014

After spending six years in hospital and residential Care, Catherine has finally returned home. The mum-of-one, arrived back to Carrigaline, Co Cork with her delighted family.

This is the first time she had been home from a HSE facility since 2008.

Catherine receives 24/7 hour care by a nurse and carer, and this costs €38,500 per month (which includes all medication, and staff costs.)

Catherine was awarded €2.5million in 2014 to cover her ongoing care costs and was made a ward of court, based on a life expectancy of 10 years (from 2008.)

We're soon coming up on 10 years, and Catherine has outlived her life expectancy, however, the funds awarded are running out.

We need your help, so that Catherine can remain at home and continue to be cared for by her wonderful team of Nurses/Carers and loving family! All donations count, big or small. Thank you!
