Cat Hospital of Austin Emergency Fund - Patty

As many of you know, we sometimes take in pets in need to provide medical care and rehome them. On St Patricks Day, one of our lovely clients found this small friend being chased by dogs. Her quick actions were able to save his life, and she managed to scoop him up in a box. Not knowing where he could be helped, she brought him to us. We fell in love with our new friend, Patrick (or Patty as we call him), right away!

After a preliminary examination and radiographs, we found that he had a severe break in his right rear leg. Poor Patty was quite shocked by his whole ordeal but has been an excellent patient regardless of his fear and discomfort. We immediately started to work, administering pain medication and splinting the leg in the hopes it would heal since he is a young healthy bunny. We also started looking right away to find his home but were unable to locate his original owner. Our hospital then assumed responsibility for the little guy and utilized some of our emergency funds to provide for his care.

Unfortunately, after consulting with several orthopedic and exotics specialists, it has become clear that the best chance for Patty to heal and ultimately be able to find him a forever home will require a specialty orthopedic procedure. The current plan is to transport him to another practice experienced in exotic orthopedic procedures and have a pin placed to secure the fracture and possibly an external fixator and/or bone graft. He will then need continued care for several weeks as well as possible follow-up procedures. The estimated costs to get this little guy healed to the point he can find a new home is estimated to be a minimum of several thousand dollars.

The small emergency fund our hospital keeps aside is generously donated by our clients as well as donated time and supplies from Dr. Percival-Leland to care for these babies. This bunny in need does not fit our typical species but deserves help and care nonetheless. We are hoping to cover the majority of Patty's medical costs, and any remaining funds will be used to provide care to our other rescue cases.
